Licensing Options

For specific information about Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, please visit this page.

Wheely is licensed with the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, CastlePoint and TfL. As a partner, our Chauffeurs can be licensed with whichever one they choose. However, there are some requirements:

What type of license do you need?

You will need:

  • a Private Hire Driver’s License (PHD), and

  • a Private Hire Vehicle’s License (PHV);

Important: You do not need an Operator License, as Wheely acts as the Operator throughout our partnership.

Do the PHV and the PHD need to be licensed by the same authority?

Yes, you MUST hold a PHV and PHD that are licensed with the same authority, otherwise, you would not be able to work as a Wheely chauffeur. For example

  • The vehicle is licensed by TfL + driver licensed by RBWM = NOT ALLOWED.

  • The vehicle is licensed by Castlepoint + driver licensed by Castlepoint = ALLOWED.

What are the benefits of being licensed by RBWM/Castlepoint versus TfL?

TfL requires all newly licensed vehicles as PHVs in London to conform to carbon emission requirements which means that new vehicles will need to be either electric or hybrid to be licensed through them.

In order to license other vehicles, you could also look to acquire a PHV and PHD from RBWM/Castlepoint, enabling you to drive with us while in London.

Will my licence affect the journeys I can take?

Your job opportunities will not be limited in any way based on the licence you have. All our chauffeurs will receive the same jobs, regardless of the authority they are licensed under.

How can I find more details and apply for a license?
